Ifra Ahmed

Ifrah Ahmed is one of the first women to publicly speak out about female genital mutilation in Somalia – a country where it is estimated that 98% of women have undergone the ritual.

Ifrah is an Irish/Somali activist, campaigner working for the elimination of female genital mutilation (FGM). She dedicates herself to work to protect others from what she survived. Ifrah Ahmed reminds us that there are many women who have mental health problems caused by effects of female genital mutilation.

I don’t want people to see me as a victim. I want people to see me empowering other women. I want to show people that whatever Somali women have been through, we can be strong and overcome it.
